Labret is a Latin word. Taken literally, it is any type of adornment that is attached to the facial lip (labrum). However, the term usually refers to a piercing that is below the bottom lip, above the chin. People wear labrets since ancient times. Among the ancient Aztecs and Mayans for example labret piercing was reserved for male members of the higher castes. Today they are used by both men and women to attract attention to the lower lip. Lately their popularity has been growing among the adepts of the Goth subculture.
