Curved barbells are very much the same as straight barbells except for being curved. They have the same mechanics and just like straight barbells they can be internally or externally threaded. The curvature can range from nearly straight to almost circular. A variation on this design is a J-bar aka bananabell or banana barbell, which has a 90 degree bend near one end. This type is used in vertical navel piercings to make the decorative end stand out. Curved barbells are most commonly used for navel and eyebrow piercing, but can also be used for nipple piercing, ear cartilage piercing etc. See also cheap ear gauges
